A grand old lady with character” — that’s how skipper Mathieu Landrieu describes BCI Brer Fox, a 40-foot One Tonner monohull designed by Ben Lexcen (architect of Australia II) and launched in 1974. “Its wooden hull and vintage lines, combined with a new carbon rig, make it a unique boat,” says Mathieu. “Since its speed doesn’t match that of more modern hulls, our focus is mainly on performance in corrected time.”

The crew of BCI Brer Fox includes Mathieu Landrieu (skipper), Joan Ahrweiller, Baptiste Bunel, Josselin Dupont, Olivier Papet, Julien Mandou, Frédéric Potin, and a yet-to-be-confirmed eighth member. “We’re quite an experienced team, with five of us having done at least one Groupama Race before — four of us on this very boat,” says Mathieu. “Many of us sail and train together regularly, so the atmosphere is relaxed yet performance-driven.”

What they love about the race is the wide variety of experiences it offers: “There’s always a lot going on — changing weather, sails, and strategies… The night sailing is particularly intense. Even when nothing much is happening, the mood on board, the silence, the stars, and sometimes dolphins swimming alongside — it all leads to a contemplative state that’s always memorable. We come back with loads of little stories, but to hear them, you’ll have to come meet us at the race village!” The invitation is out! Their goal for this edition: do better than in 2022, when they finished 5th.
